Sony Xperia Z2 preview. 4K Video recording features to impress

Sony might have only just launched its Xperia Z1 Compact, but already rumours are rife for the next Xperia smartphone.

Also termed the Sony Sirius, the Xperia Z2 promises to be the best Sony smartphone yet, with an enhanced set of features and specs. The Xperia Z2 might not offer the most revolutionised redesign, but when it’s being based on Sony’s existing range of smartphones, how much better can it get?

Sony Xperia Z2 features

The Xperia Z and Z1 both proved pretty impressive devices when it came to features, and it looks like Sony is planning to extend this further with the Xperia Z2.

25MP Camera?

Although some Sirius rumours are hinting that we’ll see a huge 25 megapixel camera on the back of the Z2, it’s more likely that Sony will stick with the winning formula of its 20.7MP rear-facing camera. However, that is set to improve with a new Xenon flash, similar to that of the Nokia Lumia 1020. Rather than simply packing in more megapixels, Sony is instead concentrating on creating brighter, more natural-looking shots.

But will its mighty camera be a match for the upcoming HTC One+? Take a look as both rumoured devices battle it out!

A new user interface?

Leaked images revealed by the famous leakster evleaks suggests that we will also be getting an entirely new user interface on the Sony Xperia Z2.

Sony Xperia Z2 Timescape UI

Instead of the usual Sony Timescape UI we’re used to, Sony is planning to release a slightly updated version with which to lace Android KitKat. Although the images don’t look like we’ll be seeing any ground-breaking changes, there are a number of new features set to make the Z2 stand out.

Some subtle differences include a new range of homescreen launchers, as well as an accessories menu, which we think might be designed for Sony’s growing range of wearable devices. Another feature destined for the Xperia Z2 also includes a double-tap feature which will wake up the device to save battery, similarly to the LG G2.

4K recording

More leaked images circulating on the web show the Z2 will have enhanced camera features, including 4K recording.

Sony Xperia Z2 4K video recording feature

A huge theme at this year’s CES was 4K recording, and it looks like the Sony Xperia Z2 will might be destined to be one of the first smartphones with 4K video recording capabilities.

LG is allegedly working on a similar feature for its Pro 2 smartphone, and we’re sure Samsung will jump on the bandwagon sooner or later, so it looks like a battle over 4K might ensue in 2014.

Some ‘Sirius’ specs

Although official Xperia Z2 specs are yet to be announced, evleaks has revealed that the device will sport a slightly larger screen than its predecessor, stretching from 5-inches to a 5.2-inch display. But the startling revelation about this isn’t the screen size, but rather the screen’s resolution. The latest rumours suggest we’ll see a whopping 2560 x 1440 screen resolution with a 506 pixel per inch ratio, dwarfing the Z1’s 441 ppi entirely.

Under the hood, the Sony Sirius is also rumoured to feature a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and a mega 3GB of RAM, to mimic the powerhouse that is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Xperia Z2 release date and price

Sony Mobile MWC 2014 - Xperia Z2

So when will we finally get a glimpse of this mysterious device? So far the Sony Xperia Z2 release date is set for this year’s MWC, but with the Z1 Compact only having been revealed at CES last month, it’s difficult to ascertain whether Sony will be ready to launch its next flagship to the world just yet.

As with most smartphones when they’re at this ambiguous rumour-stage, the exact price of the Xpeira Z2 is unknown. However, we can take a guess at the £550 mark, based on the Z2’s closest rivals in the market right now.

A monthly contract price is also hard to ascertain, but if the Sony Xperia Z1’s contract price is anything to go by, it’ll be a steal. Visit our Xperia Z2 features and deals page for more info on this exciting smartphone release.
