Preview of the Nokia N97

N97

In the past couple of days Nokia have announced the first ever Nseries touchscreen mobile phone with the Nokia N97 and so here at Mobiles.co.uk we thought we would take a sneak peek at the phone that looks set to be the first big hit of 2009. The focal point of the N97 is the beautiful 3.5 inch TFT touchscreen display which supports up to 16M colours making it perfect for watching movies and browsing the web. The N97's touchscreen will also support handwriting recognition, has a built in accelerometer meaning the screen will automatically rotate to match which way up the phone is being held and also has a proximity sensor which switches the screen on to standby when the phone is held to your ear when on a call.

The N97 is a Symbian phone running on the latest touchscreen S60 operating system with the most notable new addition being mobile Widgets. Widgets are customisable icons that can be added to the homepage. Simply tapping on the appropriate icon will then take you in to your desired application.

The second specification that made us sit up and take notice was the memory. The N97 features a truly staggering 32GB of on board memory which is the highest ever found on a mobile phone. Want more? Well the Nokia N97's got it thanks to a memory card slot which will support up to a 16GB microSD card potentially giving us a 48GB mobile phone. With these kinds of stats Nokia have clearly set their sights on creating the multimedia phone.

The N97 also has one more trick up its sleeve; a full QWERTY keyboard which slides out in a curved motion (similar to the Sony Ericsson X1). This addition, along with the excellent display and the inclusion of HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity makes the N97 a perfect web browsing tool. The N97 also supports flash video playback meaning that any site you visit with embedded video clips or animations will work perfectly, just as if you were browsing on a PC or Laptop. This means a completely undiluted web browsing experience.

Elsewhere the Nokia N97 features built in GPS with Nokia Maps for location based services as well as SatNav. The large screen means that the N97 can easily been used in car as Nokia Maps also supports voice guided navigation. The inclusion of Assisted GPS is also a nice touch as it will help to speed up the phone getting a satellite lock on by using your network. The camera on board is 5.0 Megapixel with a Carl Zeiss lens and Autofocus which should make for some impressive image capturing, DVD quality video capture and a secondary camera on the front for video calling. Also included are Bluetooth v2.0 for streaming music and of course a built in media player with support for a range of music and video file formats.

The Nokia N97 is slated for a launch in Quarter 2 of 2009. You can register interest in this phone and we will keep you up to date with any new developments via email. Be sure to look out for our full review on the Nokia N97 in early 2009 on Mobiles.co.uk.
