The HTC One M9 camera is now official, and it looks like when it comes to the new phone’s camera, HTC has gone for revolution rather than evolution.
Here we take a look at the HTC One M9 camera: differences, similarities and how it stacks up to the previous offering on the HTC One M8…
HTC One camera specs
20-megapixels on the back, UltraPixel up front
The previous incarnations of the HTC One gave us the never before seen UltraPixel camera, and while the HTC One M9 does have an UltraPixel lens, it has been relegated to the front of the phone.
On the rear of the handset, HTC has decided to join the crowd, opting for a standard 20-megapixel camera which is set to rival the likes of the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6.
The advantage of the HTC UltraPixel camera was due to the fact it would capture much more light so photography under low lighting conditions would still result in amazing images. The new 20 megapixel camera on the HTC One M9 delivers impressive results regardless of its lacking the UltraPixel technology.
That said, if you find yourself in low light conditions and not satisfied with what the camera picks up you can simply use the UltraPixel lens on the front – you get the best of both worlds with this handset.
HTC One M9 camera review: software
HTC Zoe, HTC Eye Experience and the One Gallery
As you would expect from a HTC flagship smartphone there is plenty of software on board to give you unique and interesting images. The HTC Eye Experience software allows you to take Voice Selfies, create Split Captures and even apply Live Makeup for the perfect photo finish.
The Zoe app was available on the One M8 and it is still present and correct on the HTC One M9 with some extra functionality including the ability to combine your photos with friends’ so you can see multiple points of view of the same event.
The HTC One M9’s One Gallery app is an intuitive app that groups your photos and videos, with advanced search controls allowing you to search through the device as well as the photos you have shared on social media and other online sites.
Samsung Galaxy S6 vs HTC One M9 vs iPhone 6 camera
When it comes down to a camera comparison between today’s leading phones including the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the popular iPhone 6, then we find an interesting story.
As we have seen the HTC One M9 has a 20 megapixel main camera which is higher than the Samsung Galaxy S6’s 16 megapixel and the Apple iPhone 6’s 8 megapixel lens. And while the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6 have all been boosted with additional camera features to make your photos go wow, the HTC One M9’s megapixel count and extra HTC camera apps make the One M9 a real contender.
HTC One M9
Is the 20 megapixel camera on the HTC One M9 the best in the business?
Things get even more interesting when it comes to the smartphones’ secondary selfie cameras. As already mentioned, HTC has used its famous UltraPixel technology in the front facing camera whilst the iPhone 6 boasts Apple’s FaceTime HD technology, both of which focus on improving the picture by letting in more light. This leaves the Samsung Galaxy S6 standing alone with its 5 megapixel front camera which, on paper anyway, doesn’t quite stand up to the competition.
HTC One M9 Features
Premium design, Premium software
And if you thought it was just the One M9 camera that was the showstopper, you’d be wrong. The rest of the One M9 offers up an impressive design with top-spec features and software.
