Flagship Battle! Sony Xperia Z3 vs Galaxy S5
The age-old battle of the flagship smartphones has always raged on been between the likes of Apple and Samsung. But Sony has been quietly sneaking up on both manufacturers, and has now grown to become one of the main competitors in the market.
With Samsung having already released its flagship smartphone for this year, the Galaxy S5, how will Sony’s upcoming Xperia Z3 match-up with it? Can Sony really take down one of the biggest releases of the year?
Sony vs Samsung Specs!
Sony and Samsung have always been right at the forefront of the smartphone market when it comes to specs, so it’s no surprise to see both handsets’ spec sheets are reading strongly again this time round. But which flagship handset will prove the most powerful?
The Galaxy S5 has been around since March and packs a very friendly 5.1” Super AMOLED display running a 1080p resolution. Also, with up to 32GB expandable storage and 2GB RAM under the hood, you know you’re getting a great deal of brawn to match its beauty.
The Galaxy S5 also features a Snapdragon 801 processor running at an impressively fast 2.5GHz whilst a mighty 2800mAh battery handles the energy supply for the S5. Overall this makes for a great flagship handset for Android and Samsung fans out there.
Sony isn’t going to let Samsung walk all over it however, battling back with a slightly larger 5.2” TRILUMINOS display which is also capable of a full HD 1080p resolution. 16GB storage might leave you wanting at first, but with a MicroSD card it will be of little consequence. Also, with a sizable 3GB RAM count, it actually outguns the S5 at multi-tasking.
An identical 2.5GHz processor also makes its way into the Sony device. So, when placed side by side it’s near impossible to tell the two apart.
S5 vs Z3 Cameras
Whilst the specs inside the handset are very important, it’s also worth taking the cameras into consideration too.
The Xperia Z3 kicks us off with the very same 20.7 megapixel effort which was also on the previous Z1, Z1 Compact and Z2 handsets. This time though, the Xperia Z3 is packing a 2.2 megapixel front lens which makes for an all-round powerhouse on the camera front.
Samsung is slightly behind the Z3 with a 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S5, though this is more than capable of capturing some fantastic images.
On the front of the phone a 2 megapixel front facing lens is sure to keep the selfie snappers happy.
Samsung vs Sony Design
When it comes to design, the Xperia Z3 and Galaxy S5 couldn’t be more different.
Samsung has shunned its critics by sticking with a polycarbonate body, favouring a dimpled soft-touch plastic casing. The front side is obviously dominated by its display, but the handset itself is available in four colours, with black, white, blue and gold the current options up for sale.
Sony on the other hand is seen as having more of a premium design, continuing with the glass panel design that has proven so successful on the previous handsets. Its aluminium frame also offers up some sturdiness as well as a stylish design trait. The Z3 is available in four different colours, with black, green, white and copper on offer.
Both smartphones feature water and dust protection ratings, meaning that no matter which one you opt for, an accidental dip in the bath or even the toilet will cause no problems, as long as all the ports and sockets are closed.
Verdict
So which is the stronger handset, the Samsung Galaxy S5 or the upcoming Sony Xperia Z3?
Both smartphones offer a near identical spec sheet, however, the Z3 does boast a better camera between the two. Handset design will come down to personal taste but it is expected that the Galaxy S5 will be a little cheaper than the Z3 for quite a while.
