Everything you need to know about the Cat s60

Really robust

Durable build

Made by Caterpillar, a world leader in construction, mining, engines and practically every other heavy-duty industry, the S60 was always going to be robust, but this really is a rhino of a phone. It’s particularly well-suited to smartphone users who often work in harsh, wet or dusty environments.

This is because the S60 is IP68 certified. This basically means that it’s completely dust-proof and waterproof to five metres for up to an hour! While some handsets have this certification, CAT has made their smartphone MIL-STD-810G compliant, making it salt, humidity, rain, radiation, transport, vibration and thermal shock-proof.

You can also drop it onto concrete from up to 1.8m and it’ll survive thanks to its reinforced frame, and the screen is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, well known for its super-strong properties. It’s safe to say that whatever you throw at this phone, it’ll take it!

One-of-a-kind features

CAT advertise that its S60 is ‘beyond military grade’, which is a fair comment once you experience the phone’s amazing features. The biggest and most interesting is the on board thermal imaging camera that’s perfectly suited to police, ambulance and fire personnel who need to see through smoke, or tradespeople who can use it to detect areas where hot water plumbing has failed or electrics are overheating.

This camera isn’t available on any other smartphone yet, which makes the S60 very special indeed. There’s also a switch on the back that switches the phone between its two-metre and five-metre protection modes – for the latter it seals off the ports and speakers to make the device hyper-secure.

There’s also a digital compass, temperature sensor and fast charge to enjoy as well, alongside a breadth of regular smartphone features.

Power under the hood

CAT S60 power

To add to all of this, the CAT S60 is a seriously powerful handset. The chipset is a Snapdragon 617 Octa-core that contains four 1.2 GHz and four 1.5 GHz processors to power the high-spec features, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage space, upgradeable by 256 GB via a micro SD slot. The operating system is the very capable Android 6 Marshmallow.

All of these mean that you can load a huge number of apps on the device and multi-task with ease, and the battery is similarly amazing – a 3,800 mAh cell that offers days of charge, perfect for long periods on the job or activities like hiking and mountain climbing.

The rear-facing camera is a crisp 13 MP, while the front has a good 5 MP sensor for those all-important building site selfies.
