Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Review

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Review

We were very impressed by the Galaxy Z Fold6 when it landed in 2024, standing out for its brilliantly-executed design and beautiful screens. The question then was where does Samsung take its successor and build on those excellent foundations.

In this review, we’ll be taking a deep dive into the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and analysing its defining features, from the folding form factor and larger screen to the inclusion of Android 16.

Pick up the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 with up to 1TB storage space and from three colour styles: Blue Shadow, Jet Black and Silver Shadow.

Design

The biggest talking point of the Galaxy Z Fold7’s design is how remarkably thin it is, especially when compared to the Z Fold6. To put this into perspective, we’re talking a reduction of 4mm to the phone’s depth, down from 12.1mm on the Z Fold6; one of the most significant dimension changes we’ve seen in a very long time.

The impact of such a reduction in thickness can’t be underestimated. The Z Fold7 fits much more easily in the pocket and is considerably lighter to boot, weighing in at 215g down from 239g on the Z Fold6. This makes the Z Fold7 the lightest foldable phone as of its release; an absolute dream for those that like to travel without feeling weighed down.

In terms of build and materials, the Z Fold7 is undoubtedly a step up from its predecessor. It comes with the same Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the screens, yet this is also paired with Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 as an additional shield against bumps and scratches. IP48 water and dust resistance is also included; it would have been nice to see an increase to IP68 as is the case with many modern smartphones, but IP48 is more than good enough for general use.

The Z Fold7’s frame is reinforced with Advanced Armor Aluminium, which strengthens the phone against drops. The Flex Hinge that enables the phone to fold over has also been strengthen with Armor Aluminium, making it more durable.

Display

Where the Z Fold6 sported a vibrant-but-small 6.3” cover display, the Z Fold7 features a more immersive 6.5” screen. The resolution is also Full HD rather than 968p, so there’s more detail in every image and video.

The main unfolded display also sees a significant upgrade – rising from 7.6” to 8” – and is paired with an increase in resolution. The results are predictably superb, especially when unfolding the screen to play games or watch a film. One thing to note, however, is the inclusion of a camera cutout at the top of the unfolded display; this might distract some people, but it does enable the Z Fold7 to take photos at a wider 100° angle.

We can’t talk about the Z Fold7 without talking about the crease between the screens; the bane of early foldable phones. We’ve reviewed many folding handsets and seen how the crease has become less distracting over time, which Samsung nailed on the Z Fold7. We could barely tell the crease was there, although you can see it if you look hard enough.

Overall, the Z Fold7’s display experience is as premium as you can get, but there is one omission that might disappoint some users: the lack of S Pen support. If you have used a large handset previously and enjoyed using a stylus to take notes etc., it’s back to using your finger.

Performance

Given the multitasking and gaming capabilities of the Z Fold7 due to its form factor, we hoped to see a processor under the hood that could withstand a heavy workload. Thankfully, that’s exactly what happened with the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Gen 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset. This processor easily handled any task we threw at it; switching from a game to a different app, having two apps open on screen in unfolded mode, the Z Fold7 barely broke a sweat.

This phone also benefits from having 12GB RAM to help ease the processor’s workload. Those who buy the 1TB storage model will get 16GB RAM, too, making it the ideal option if you want the best possible performance.

Software

The Z Fold7 is quite unique on the software side of things, as it’s one of the few Samsung handsets to launch with the latest version of Android before Google’s updated Pixel series. In this case it’s Android 16, which comes with features that are particularly useful on the Z Fold7. One of the most significant standouts is desktop windowing, which enables you to group and resize apps on large displays; very handy on the Z Fold7’s 8” unfolded screen. We found it far easier to manage multiple apps compared to previous Z Fold devices, so a big tick for Samsung here.

Gemini AI has also been improved for the Z Fold7. Using Gemini Live is a breeze thanks to the tablet-optimised interface, making the experience feel considerably more natural on the unfolded screen. You can also use Gemini on one side of the display and ask it to analyse things on the other; all in all, it feels far more intuitive.

Cameras

The Z Fold6 was an exceptional camera phone, but the Z Fold7 improves upon it in several key ways. First of all, the 200MP wide lens represents a significant upgrade from the Z Fold6’s 50MP offering, producing photos with a greater level of detail. This camera is the very same featured on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, so you’re getting professional results with the handy shooting and editing functionality that comes with being a foldable phone.

The second major change is moving from a 4MP main front camera to 10MP; selfie images look far sharper as a result. You can also record videos up to 8K at 30FPS, which look absolutely stunning.

Battery

Staying with a 4400mAh battery might seem like a lacklustre feature at first glance, but considering that the Z Fold7 is slimmer and sleeker than its predecessor, we were quite impressed to see no reduction in battery capacity to accommodate the thinner design. According to Samsung, this battery can support up to 24 hours of video playback, which is ~1 hour longer than the Z Fold6.

Recharge time is one area where the Z Fold7 could do better, only supporting a maximum of 25W. Regardless, it’s quite easy to keep it charged up throughout the day and during the commute.

Summary

After several years of refining its foldable phone lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is the most confident device of its kind we’ve seen from Samsung. Its build quality is exceptional, the reduction in thickness is a game-changer, and the improvements made to the camera suite put the Z Fold7 on par with the industry’s best.
