Top Recipe Apps for Healthy Eating in 2021

Eating nutritious, good-for-you meals might seem difficult, but it doesn't have to be. Whether you're about to take your first steps towards a happier, healthier lifestyle and you have no idea where to start, or you're in need of new ideas to switch things up for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the healthy recipe apps below are sure to help.

Yummly

Available on: iOS and Android
Price: Free with in-app purchases

Already an extremely popular website, Yummly is home to over 2 million unique recipes. By scanning the world's best blogs and cooking sites, Yummly provides endless recipes for meals, snacks and healthy drinks right at your fingertips.

The app itself is available for free on both iOS and Android, with some in-app purchases available. If you have a particular recipe in mind, or even a vague idea of what you'd like to eat - let's say you fancy pasta, for example - you can use the search bar to find what you're looking for. However, if it's inspiration you need there are a number of different ways to customise Yummly to suit you.

You can let it know your dietary preferences - including allergies and personal tastes - to tailor the recipes it shows you. Whether you're vegan, gluten-free or simply hate tomatoes, you'll only see options that suit you. The app will even learn what you like the more you use the app, and you can add interesting recipes to your digital recipe box if you'd like to save them for later.

All recipes come with step-by-step instructions, and some even have video tutorials. You can plan meals for the entire week, and add full recipes to a virtual shopping list to make sure you remember every ingredient during your weekly supermarket trip. It even helps you cut down waste - if you have a bunch of ingredients that you need to use up, enter them into the app and you'll be able to see a selection of meals you can make.

Yummly also has a Widget available for iOS users, and can be synced with Apple's Health app.

Easy Meals

Available on: iOS and Android
Price: Free

Free on iOS and Android from Public Health England, Easy Meals has been created to ensure healthy eating is an option for everyone. There are over 150 affordable recipes currently featured in the app, including modified, healthier alternatives to family favourites like spaghetti bolognese, carrot soup and bang bang chicken.

You can browse categories organised by nutritional value - such as under 400-calorie breakfasts and under 600-calorie dinners - or find inspiration using the app's Meal Mixer tool. Similar to Yummly, you can also keep track of the ingredients you'll need to bring each dish to life by adding them to a virtual shopping list. Just bring your phone with you, or email the list to yourself to print out when you head to the supermarket.

Green Kitchen

Available on: iOS
Price: £3.99

If you're interested in switching to a vegetarian diet, or you'd like to add more plant-based meals into your weekly routine, Green Kitchen is a fantastic choice. As well as the aesthetically pleasing interface, it's full of tasty, unique recipes that are guaranteed to bring some excitement back to mealtimes.

There are over 150 recipes to try, each accompanied by detailed step-by-step instructions. Some recipes even have video tutorials to help you perfect your skills, and you can quickly save dishes you're interested in for a later date.

Like the other apps, there's a shopping list function to help with planning, and you can browse recipes by dietary requirements too. Many are marked vegan, gluten-free and wholegrain, making it easy to safely experiment with new food.
