Honor 50 Review

Honor 50 Review

Released in July 2021, the Honor 50 joins the market as a competitive Android device with an appealing midrange price tag. But despite its modest cost, there’s a handful of high-end specs and features to explore that might seem more at home on a flagship smartphone. From the 6.57-inch OLED display to the powerful 108MP wide lens, there’s a lot to love about this handset. We unpack exactly what you can expect from the Honor 50 in more detail below.

Honor 50 Design & Display

The first thing you’ll notice about the Honor 50 is the 6.57-inch OLED display, which has a 75-degree Super Curved design with bevelled edges, for an even more immersive viewing experience. With a screen-to-body ratio of 89.7% and a 120Hz refresh rate for super smooth transitions, this handset is ideal for anyone who prioritises display tech, be it for streaming the latest episode of your favourite show, editing film footage or smartphone gaming.

As for the design, the Honor 50 has a durable plastic frame, with a glass front and back resulting in a glossy, iridescent finish. Thanks to the device’s curved shape, it’s comfortable in the hand, and despite the many features on board, the Honor 50 is surprisingly lightweight at 175g. There’s also a convenient fingerprint scanner built directly into the display, so when you’re unlocking your phone or making a secure contactless payment, you won’t have to reach around to the back of your device.

Honor 50 Camera System

On the rear of the Honor 50, you’ll find a sophisticated quad-lens camera system, comprising two different 2MP lenses, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and an advanced 108MP wide lens. This combination allows you to master everything from sweeping sunset views to beautiful, crisp portraits. Meanwhile, the dedicated macro lens can capture superbly clear closeups from just a few millimetres away, like the veins of a leaf or raindrops on a window. There’s even a lens specifically for bokeh photography, making the application of this artistic blurring effect easier than ever to achieve.

50-4-1

Keen amateur film makers will love the Honor 50’s ground-breaking multi-video recording mode, which enables the front and rear cameras to work simultaneously. This exciting new feature can also record both fast and slow-motion footage at the same time, giving you maximum creative control.

Over on the display, the 32MP front camera has a lot to offer, with a 90-degree field of view to help you get the whole gang in for group selfies. Super Portrait mode is great for getting those flattering solo shots, and the Super Night algorithm makes selfies possible even in dim lighting – thanks to brightening and background noise reduction.

Honor 50 Power

Working away behind the scenes, the Honor 50 is operated by a powerful Qualcomm™ Snapdragon 778G processor, a chipset advanced enough to ensure seamless multi-tasking without any noticeable lagging or glitches in performance. In terms of operating system, this smartphone comes with Honor’s own Magic UI 4.2 installed. Based on Android 11 but overlaid with the brand’s unique interface, it offers an intuitive user experience – even for those making the switch from a different manufacturer.

50-2-1

You’ll also get to enjoy all the benefits of a 5G connection with this device, so as long as you’re in a supported area, you can make the most of instant downloads, buffer-free streaming, and crystal-clear video calls.

Honor 50 Battery

The Honor 50 comes equipped with a 4,300mAh non-removeable battery, which is more than capable of handling all your everyday tasks, from your morning workout to your bedtime audiobook. When you do need to plug in and power up, you can make use of Honor’s new 66W SuperCharge technology.

50-3-1

This type of charging uses a single-cell, dual-loop design for improved efficiency and reduced heat. In fact the Honor 50 can regain up to 70% of charge in just 20 minutes when using SuperCharge, or reach 100% in as little as 45 minutes.
