Introducing the Sony Xperia 1
Sony's flagship phone for 2019, the Sony Xperia 1 is - technically - the successor of the popular Sony Xperia XZ2. Ditching the longer nametag for something simpler, Sony has loaded some of the best mobile specs onto this device - including a 6.5-inch 4K OLED screen with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, and an intriguing, impressive film-making app which amateur videographers are sure to love.
There's so much more to say about the Sony Xperia 1. Explore the device, and its best features, right here.
Sony Xperia 1 Display
Imitating the dimensions of a cinema screen, the 21:9 aspect ratio is a standout feature of the Sony Xperia 1. You'll be able to view films in the way they were originally intended, without the need for letterboxing or cut-off edges. There's no notch at the top of the Xperia 1's display either, so you really can enjoy an uninterrupted, immersive picture.
Measuring 6.5 inches, the Xperia 1's CinemaWide screen offers 4K HDR OLED viewing, with motion colour reproduction and a built-in ambient lighting sensor that'll adjust brightness levels depending on your surroundings.
You can choose to view the device in Creator Mode, which is powered by minds behind Sony's cutting-edge CineAlta digital movie camera range. With this activated, you'll have a 10-bit equivalent display in your hands, with an outstanding contrast ratio of 1000,000:1. It's pretty high-tech stuff, but it's all on board to ensure you can view colours in the way the film creator would have wanted.
Want to keep watching a YouTube video as you text you friend back? It's easy with split screen mode. The height of the screen means you don't need to turn position the device horizontally to take full advantage of split screen mode either. Two apps can happily sit together - one above and one below - and you can comfortably access both simultaneously.
Sony Xperia 1 Design
The Sony Xperia 1 is an all-glass handset, and it's protected by strong Corning Gorilla Glass front and back. Between the glass there's a premium metal frame, available in a range of different colours.
Along the right-hand side of the Xperia 1 you'll find all the device's buttons, including a volume rocker, power button, camera button and a fingerprint sensor. Despite this, the Xperia 1 still sports a seamless frame that is dust and water resistant. As for measurements, the phone measures 167 x 72 x 8.2mm and weighs 178g - more than reasonable for a larger handset.
Sony Xperia 1 Camera
In true Sony fashion, the Sony Xperia 1 has a brilliant triple-lens camera system to offer. Each individual lens boasts 12MP, but all three vary when it comes to measurements. The first 12MP camera has a 26mm lens and Exmor RS sensor, the second consists of a super-wide 16mm lens ideal for landscape photography while the third is a 52mm lens capable of 2x optical zoom.
RAW noise reduction technology first found on Sony's Alpha cameras, Eye AF technology, Auto Focus and Auto Exposure all work alongside the triple-lens rear camera to deliver defined, focused and vibrant shots no matter where you are. Sony's dual photo diode technology means you'll be able to focus on the subject of your shot even in low light, and you'll have full control of the shutter speed and ISO on the Xperia 1 so you can really let your inner photographer take over and get creative with those camera settings.
We've already mentioned the Xperia 1 is designed for movies, and that theme continues when it comes to shooting a video yourself. Record in 4K HDR in 21:9, and shoot with confidence thanks to Optical SteadyShot, which'll help to reduce shaking and ensure smooth recording. Cinema Pro - Sony's exclusive film app - gives you plenty of freedom to edit your videos as well, enabling you to do things like grab a still image from a video at any moment, or tweak video settings even after the record putting has been pressed for the final time.
The Xperia 1's 8MP front-facing camera is also ideal for selfie lovers, and the on-board Portrait Mode helps to recreate a professional bokeh effect.
Sony Xperia 1 Power
The Xperia 1 isn't short on power, and 6GB RAM and a high-spec Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset ensures the phone can run smoothly and efficiently even when facing pressure from graphic-heavy apps and games.
There's also 128GB of built-in memory, but with a microSD card you can easily upgrade it to 512GB if you need extra space for all those 4K videos. Android Pie, the latest Android operating system, sits at the core of the Xperia 1, offering benefits like Google Assistant and Digital Wellbeing.
Sony Xperia 1 Battery
Creating a smartphone you can rely on, Sony has added a 3,330 mAh battery on the Xperia 1. An all-day charge is to be expected, and with Fast Charger included with the handset, you'll be able to reach 50% power in just 30 minutes.
What's more, Smart Stamina and Xperia Adaptive Charging work behind the scenes to help you get the most out of the Xperia 1's battery. Smart Stamina gets to know how you use your phone, minimising power to background apps and those you use less frequently, while Xperia Adaptive Charging will keep an eye on the phone's battery health when it is powering up to prevent overcharging the device.
