iPhone 13 Series Head-to-Head

The iPhone 13 series is the latest lineup from Apple, comprising four individual handsets: iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Every smartphone in this eagerly-anticipated series is packed with cutting edge specs and features, and with such a range to choose from, there’s an iPhone 13 for every budget. We discover exactly what each of these devices has to offer in more detail below.

iPhone 13 Mini

At a glance: 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display, 12MP+12MP rear camera, 12MP front camera, 131.5 x 64.2 x 7.7mm, 141g.

Measuring 5.4 inches, iPhone 13 Mini sports the smallest display in the series, yet this pocket-sized device promises an immersive viewing experience, thanks to minimal bezels and an 85.1% screen-to-body ratio. The sleek aluminium frame combines with Gorilla Glass on the rear for maximum durability, and Apple’s own Ceramic Shield on the front – it’s also rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, so you won’t need to worry about a little dirt or rain.

On the rear of the phone, you’ll find Apple’s most advanced dual-camera system yet, made up of one 12MP wide lens, which now lets in up to 47% more light, and a second 12MP ultra wide lens, with a 120-degree field of view to help you capture beautiful landscapes. Optical image stabilisation has been upgraded too, with sensor-shift technology to keep your images crisp and clean, even when you’re shooting in unsteady hands.

Another camera highlight on board is the new Cinematic Mode, a dedicated videography setting that’s featured on all four devices in the iPhone 13 series. This mode uses depth effects to focus on your subject during filming, and intelligently shifts this focus when your subject changes – for example, if a second person in the frame starts to talk.

Every device in the range is 5G-ready, so you can enjoy instant downloads, seamless streaming and lag-free gaming, and with the next- generation A15 Bionic chip working away behind the scenes, you’ll have no trouble multitasking. Running out of power is no concern either, as according to Apple, the battery can achieve up to 15 hours of video playback. Charge up wirelessly with any Qi-certified charger (sold separately), or plug in for just 30 minutes and get back up to 50% with 20W fast charging.

iPhone 13

At a glance: 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, 12MP+12MP rear camera, 12MP front camera, 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7mm, 174g.

Next up, let’s take a look at iPhone 13. This second device includes many of the same specs as iPhone 13 Mini, with a handful of additional features. The first thing you’ll notice is the slightly bigger 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, with the same rounded corners to improve ergonomic comfort. Just like its smaller sibling, iPhone 13 has Haptic Touch for a responsive user experience, as well as True Tone technology, which intelligently adjusts brightness and colour intensity in line with your surroundings.

The camera setup also mirrors that of the 13 Mini, with one 12MP wide lens, one 12MP ultra wide lens, and 2x optical zoom range, so you can hone in on the details without compromising on clarity. There are plenty of dedicated photography settings to explore too, including Night Mode, Panorama, and Portrait Mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control, allowing you to masterfully capture everything from sweeping countryside views to breathtaking headshots. You can record in 4K, and experiment with videography features like Slo-mo, Night mode time-lapse and Audio zoom, which spotlights the most important sounds and diminishes background noise.

Like all the handsets in the series, iPhone 13 has iOS 15 installed straight out of the box. That means you can make the most of everything Apple’s latest operating system has to offer – like SharePlay, which enables you to watch TV shows and movies right alongside your friends and family, even when you’re far apart. This phone also runs on the A15 Bionic chip, but has a slightly more powerful battery, capable of up to 19 hours video playback.

iPhone 13 Pro

At a glance: 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, 12MP+12MP+12MP rear camera, 12MP front camera, 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7mm, 204g.

At first glance, iPhone 13 Pro looks a lot like iPhone 13, but rather than aerospace-grade aluminium, this handset has a surgical-grade stainless steel frame, which gives it a soft matte finish. The 6.1-inch display comes with ProMotion technology, and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This option is ideal for smartphone gamers as it allows for smoother transitions, so graphics are more fluid and lifelike during gameplay.

pro

As for the camera system, iPhone 13 Pro features an additional 12MP telephoto lens, giving it three lenses in total and enabling up to 6x optical zoom, for even more striking closeups. Meanwhile, the 12MP ultra wide lens can focus from just 2cm away, allowing you to get creative and take stunning macro footage for a new perspective on everyday objects. A LiDAR scanner has also been built into the camera, and this addition makes Night Mode portraits possible, as well as providing better autofocus in dim lighting, so you can perfect those sunset shots.

In terms of power, the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are the leading devices in the series, running on Apple’s A15 Bionic Chip and a slightly more advanced 5-core GPU to support the higher refresh rate. The battery is a little bigger too, with 22 hours’ maximum video playback, but the charging capabilities are the same, so you can still make the most of 15W MagSafe charging, and 20W fast charging with a compatible charger (sold separately) if you’re in a hurry.

iPhone 13 Pro Max

At a glance: 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, 12MP+12MP+12MP rear camera, 12MP front camera, 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.7mm, 240g.

Lastly, we have iPhone 13 Pro Max – the flagship phone in the series, which plays host to an impressive 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display, with ProMotion technology and an adaptive refresh rate. The size of this handset makes it a great choice for users who prioritise video content; you’ll enjoy an immersive viewing experience on the go, whether you’re scrolling through social media or editing your own footage.

Turn the handset over and you’ll find the same 12MP triple lens camera system featured on the 13 Pro, with three lenses and up to 15x digital zoom. All the photography modes you’d expect to find on a flagship Apple device are present, including Deep Fusion, which blends together several exposures at once resulting in a brilliantly detailed image. The camera on the Pro Max also comes with six different Portrait Lighting effects, such as Natural, Studio and Stage Mono, so there’s a setting to suit every possible scenario.

With such a high-spec display and so much camera tech to explore, it’s a good thing the phone isn’t short on power. The A15 Bionic Chip works in tandem with a 16-core neural engine to keep your handset running smoothly, so it can handle even the most complex combination of demands without a glitch. You can surf the net with 5G, dip in and out of different apps, and scroll through your photos – all while you’re on a videocall – with no dip in performance. The Li-Ion battery is designed to keep up with you too, with up to 28 hours’ video playback so you shouldn't get caught out on zero percent when you’re mid-eposide.
