Design

Differences between the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE and the base Flip7 are apparent upon first glance, with a larger bezel around the camera bump and 3.4” cover display. The Flip7 FE isn’t quite as immersive as a result, instead offering a very similar viewing experience to 2024’s Z Flip6. The dimensions of the Z Flip7 FE are also basically identical, measuring 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9mm.

Featuring aluminium to create a robust frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for a durable back panel, the Flip7 FE is a sturdy phone to say the least. Dust and water resistance is also rated at IP48, keeping the handset safe from submersion up to 1.5m.

It’s clear that Samsung borrowed heavily from the Flip6 when designing the Flip7 FE; an intentional decision to provide a more affordable flip phone option while leveraging that phone’s excellent build quality.

Display

Similar to its design, the Flip7 FE’s screens are essentially a perfect match for the Z Flip6. On the inside of the handset, the main 6.7” Dynamic AMOLED 2x display is a beauty to marvel at. Combined with a 120Hz refresh rate, all actions from general scrolling to swapping between apps feel silky-smooth; the same can be said for the 3.4” Super AMOLED cover screen, too.

It’s not just the vibrant colours that stand out on this display, but also the incredible amount of detail thanks to the 2640 x 1080 (FHD+) resolution. HDR10+ further enhances picture quality on the Flip7 FE by offering a much wider range of colours.

Performance

Where the Flip7 FE does differ from the Flip6 is in the processor department, instead featuring the Samsung Exynos 2400. It’s an impressive chipset and provides more than enough processing power to deliver smooth running speeds when taking photos or gaming.

12GB RAM is included to support the processor and reduce stutter when performing tasks. In terms of storage space, you are getting slightly less than the base Flip7 or Flip6, but 128GB and 256GB is generally enough when combined with Cloud storage.

Software

The Z Flip7 FE comes packed with Android 16, delivering an updated array of features such as force grouping of notifications. Multiple years of updates and security patches are also expected, ensuring the Flip7 FE is software-relevant for years to come.

On the artificial intelligence side of things, the Flip7 FE includes Galaxy AI and useful features like Circle To Search, Best Take, Live Translate and Generative Edit. There are ample AI features to explore on this handset, with more expected in core updates in the future.

Cameras

As we’ve explored, the Z Flip7 FE is very much designed to be an affordable entry point to the Flip series. Even though its camera hardware is identical to the Flip6 and base Flip7, there’s plenty to admire about the camera capabilities on offer. There’s a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultra-wide lens on the rear, which capture richly-detailed photos with ease. There’s also a 10MP front camera; ideal for snapping quick-yet-striking selfies.

If you want to take your photos to the next level, a wide range of shooting and editing features are at your disposal. A particular favourite is Nightography, which increases the clarity of images in low-light conditions. Other features such as Panorama, Hyperlapse and Flex Mode are also excellent additions, the latter of which takes full advantage of the Flip7 FE’s folding form factor.

Battery

As far as battery life is concerned, the Flip7 FE has the same 4000mAh unit as the Flip6, which provides plenty of juice to get you through the day. According to Samsung, this equates to around 24 hours of video playback; we had little worry when using it generally or pushing it harder in games.

25W charging is supported, which isn’t the best you’ll see on the market but can easily keep you going while on the go.

Summary

If you’re an existing owner of a Flip6 handset, there’s little reason to jump ship to the Z Flip7 FE. However, if you’ve been tempted to try a flip phone but found the price tag to be an obstacle, this is a fantastic option. The Flip7 FE packs in many of the Flip6 and 7 series’ top features without breaking the bank.
