How do the new iPhone releases measure up against the competition?

With the new iPhone generation causing excitement, we've decided to compare the latest Apple offerings (iPhone Xs, Xs Max and XR) with some of the best devices currently on the market to see how they measure up.

Get ready, we're putting the Samsung Galaxy S9, Google Pixel 2, Huawei P20 Pro and all three new iPhones head-to-head.

iPhone Xs

At a glance: 5.8-inch Super Retina display, 4GB RAM, IP68 water and dust resistance rating, 177g, 5.65 x 2.79 x 0.30 inches.

iPhone Xshas adopted a very similar frame to the iPhone X, and the all-glass design with its signature Apple notch and absent home button make this one stylish-looking smartphone. The screen is 5.8 inches and has been created with Apple's brand-new display technology, Super Retina custom OLED.

More vibrant and sharper than ever thanks to an amazing 458 ppi pixel density, its easy viewing on iPhone Xs. A next-generation Neural Engine and the ultra-powerful A12 Bionic chip keep all processes running at lightning speed, ideal for when you want to take advantage of Apple features like Face ID, Animoji, Apple Pay and talk to Siri.

You'll find a dual-lens 12MP camera on board, and a 7MP True Depth camera system on the front. Photo quality is exceptional - much like the other top-rated handsets featured below - but its Apple's new features that make the iPhone Xs special. Smart HDR ensures your photo always has perfect lighting by intelligently combining multiple shots together, while Depth Control enables you to adjust the depth of field of an image even when you've already pressed the shutter button.

Great for: Anyone looking for a high-spec smartphone with a great camera, fast processor and plenty of Apple-only features.

iPhone Xs Max

At a glance: 6.5-inch Super Retina display, 4GB RAM, IP68 water and dust resistance rating, 208g, 6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 inches.

If you're of the opinion that bigger always means better, then you're going to love iPhone Xs Max. The super-sized version of iPhone Xs, it boasts the largest display to ever be used on an iPhone. With a screen measuring 6.5 inches and an 82.9% screen-to-body ratio, this phablet will provide you with an unbelievable viewing experience.

sxmax

You'll also find all the same great new features from iPhone Xs on iPhone Xs Max. From the incredible dual-lens 12MP camera with Smart HDR and Depth Control to the improved water resistance rating and seriously fast A12 Bionic chip. To support that larger screen however, you'll find a bigger battery on the iPhone Xs Max at 3,400mAh.

Great for: Anyone who loves the sound of the iPhone Xs, but would prefer a much larger display.

iPhone XR

At a glance: 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, 3GB RAM, IP67 water and dust resistance rating, 194g, 5.94 x 2.98 x 0.33 inches.

iPhone XR shares many similarities with iPhone Xs, despite its lower price point. If you're not seduced by the dual-lens camera, and you love the idea of a more colourful design, then iPhone XR will be right up your street.

iPhone XR uses Liquid Retina technology for its display, instead of Super Retina. The most advanced LCD screen to ever be used on a smartphone, you can still expect colours to look rich and true-to-life, and details to be defined. iPhone XR's screen measures 6.1 inches that's the same size as the Huawei P20 Pro, and larger than iPhone Xs.

You'll find the A12 chip, next-generation Neural Engine and innovative 7MP True Depth camera system on board too, alongside Face ID, Animoji and Apple Pay. It also shares the same all-glass design and offers wireless charging, but is available in more colours, from classic black and white to blue, coral, red and yellow.

Great for: Fans of iPhone Xs, with a slightly smaller budget.

Samsung Galaxy S9

At a glance: 5.8-inch Infinity Display, 4GB RAM, IP68 water and dust resistance rating, 163g, 5.81 x 2.70 x 0.33 inches.

Following on from the success of the Samsung Galaxy S8, it's no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy S9 was released to such praise. Everything about this handset is top notch, from the effortless design and outstanding 5.8-inch edge-to-edge screen to the dual aperture camera.

This handset's most noticeable feature is the Infinity Display, which spans right across the front of the device. There's hardly any bezel to be seen, offering a seamless viewing experience and - just like the new generation of iPhones - no home button. You will, however, still find a fingerprint scanner located on the back of the Samsung Galaxy S9 underneath the camera, and there's even a 3.5mm headphone jack if you like the option of using traditional headphones.

The 5.8-inch screen uses Samsung's stunning Infinity Display technology, frequently named by tech experts as the best screen out there. Colours are accurately reproduced, brightness levels are great, and everything is sharp and definitely defined, whether you're browsing the web or watching your favourite show.

The 12MP camera is on a par with the Google Pixel and iPhone Xs too, with its dual aperture feature making it a little bit different. Switch between f/1.5 when in low light or choose f/2.4 whenever you're in a bright environment. And that's not all. You'll find an improved Bixby, Intelligent Scan (which combines an iris scanner and facial recognition technology together, so you can securely unlock the device with your face) and AR Emoji - Samsung's equivalent of Animoji.

Great for: Anyone who loved the Samsung Galaxy S8, or smartphone users after a device with an intelligent camera and outstanding screen.

Google Pixel 2

At a glance: 5.0-inch Full HD display, 4GB RAM, IP67 water and dust resistance rating, 143g, 5.74 x 2.74 x 0.31 inches.

Despite being the most affordable handset in our list, the Google Pixel 2 is jam-packed with amazing specs. The standout feature has to be the Pixel 2's camera offering, with a single-lens 12.2MP camera on the rear and an 8MP camera on the front. You can do much more than take professional-looking photos too, just tap Google Lens and point the camera towards an object, text, building or even a sign in a foreign language. Powered by AI, Google Lens will recognise what it's viewing and offer an action - such as a translation, opening times and more.

You'll have unlimited storage space for your photos thanks to Google Photos, and the Pixel 2 can also be charged wirelessly. Google Assistant is on board too, ready to make the everyday easier - just like Bixby and Siri.

Google Pixel 2 has an attractive design, with an aluminium body and rounded edges. The AMOLED screen measures 5 inches, ideal if you're after something slightly smaller than the other handsets mentioned here. The Google Pixel 2 XL is of course still available if you want Google tech with a larger display.

Great for: Those looking to spend less on a smartphone without compromising on camera quality.

Huawei P20 Pro

At a glance: 6.1-inch FullView display, 6GB RAM, IP67 water and dust resistance rating, 180g, 6.10 x 2.91 x 0.31 inches.

While all three new-generation iPhones and both the Google Pixel 2 and Samsung Galaxy S9 have amazing on-board cameras, serious photographers may prefer to go for the Huawei P20 Pro instead. If your main priority, above everything else, is your smartphone's camera, the Huawei P20 Pro won't let you down. In fact, it's still on top of the DxOMark leaderboard - the official reference for image quality.

Why has the P20 Pro been crowned as the phone with the world's best camera? It's down to the AI-fuelled, triple-lens camera system. Engineered with experts Leica, the 40MP Light Fusion sensor, 20MP black and white lens and 8MP telephoto lens work in harmony to deliver incredibly detailed, focused, well-lit photos, no matter what environment you're in.

There's a lot more to love about the Huawei P20 Pro of course, like the remarkable 6.1-inch FullView Display, super-powered octa-core processor and a long-lasting 4,000mAh battery. You can even unlock the P20 Pro with your face - much like Apple's Face ID - although you won't find quite as many advanced sensors here as you will on the latest iPhones.

Great for: Smartphone users who are serious about photography and want to get their hands on what many claim to be the best smartphone camera yet.
