iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro
The iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro have lots to offer when it comes to performance, visuals and camera quality. Both are exceptionally powerful phones, but which is the right one for you?
We’ll answer this question by detailing each phone’s core features, so you can decide which device matches your preference. Whichever you decide, the 13 Pro and 14 Pro can be ordered in a wide range of styles and storage sizes.
Which of these is the smallest?
The smallest of these two devices is the iPhone 13 Pro, but only by a small margin. At 5.78” in height, it pips the 14 Pro by 0.03”, so the size difference is barely noticeable.
This is also the case with their weight; the 13 Pro weighs slightly less at 203g. These dimensions put both the 13 Pro and 14 Pro in the pocket-friendly category: comfortable and easy to stow away.
Which of these has the best display?
If you enjoy gaming and watching videos on-the-go, the iPhone 14 Pro is the best choice of the two devices . In terms of screen size, it’s on par with its previous generation sibling at 6.1” with a stunning OLED panel, but the 14 Pro includes some fantastic tech that take it to another level.
One such technical feature is the Dynamic Island, which is exclusive to the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models. As we highlighted in our iPhone 14 review, the Dynamic Island greatly improves the convenience of using an iPhone by presenting more bespoke information to your needs, when you want it. This includes weather, texts, and incoming calls, all presented in a smoothly animated window that expands from the camera box and shrinks after a few seconds.
The iPhone 14 Pro’s display doesn’t just impress with its convenience features, however. Games and movies benefit by looking much sharper, thanks to its peak brightness of 1600 nits in HDR (high-dynamic range) and a superb 2000 nits when viewing outdoors. If you regularly stream videos or play games, particularly when outside in bright sunlight, the 14 Pro is miles ahead of the competition.
The 14 Pro is not alone in impressing with its visuals. Thanks to the improved personalisation that is possible on iOS 16, such as the more customisable Lock Screens, both the 14 Pro and 13 Pro show off wallpaper backgrounds with a crispness and level of detail that wasn’t previously possible.
Which of these is the toughest against damage?
When protecting against damage, the 13 Pro and 14 Pro offer identical support. Each has a highly resilient Ceramic Shield glass screen and stainless steel chassis, which not only look premium, but provide a top-tier defence against bumps and scratches.
Being pocket-friendly as we highlighted previously, it was vital that the 13 Pro and 14 Pro were up to the task: the answer is a tremendous yes.
As is the case with many modern smartphones, these powerhouse handsets also have IP68 water and dust protection, enabling the 13 Pro and 14 Pro to be submerged up to six metres for approximately 30 minutes.
Phones go through a lot during our time using them, so excellent protection from wear and tear is a must-have. The iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro are therefore resounding successes, backing up their impressive looks with sturdy armour to match.
Which of these has the best performance?
The iPhone 14 Pro takes top prize for performance, thanks to impressive speeds provided by its A16 Bionic chip.
This 6-core CPU (central processing unit) is a generation above the 13 Pro’s A15 Bionic chipset, but not just in name alone. Loading speeds between apps are reduced, games run with less stutter and productivity is much easier due to the A16 Bionic’s increased memory bandwidth.
These performance improvements make the 14 Pro a dream, especially if you prioritise gaming or photography.
Which of these has the best camera?
Speaking of photography, the iPhone 14 Pro takes the crown here, with hardware and software improvements over the already-excellent Pro 13.
The 14 Pro introduces a 48MP main camera to its arsenal, which is capable of taking greater detail photos at a wide range of distances. This increased megapixel count is also vital when cropping or enlarging images without losing clarity, which the 14 Pro is more than equipped for.
This is the main improvement at hardware level, as the 13 Pro and 14 Pro both possess 12MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras, making the 13 Pro a perfectly viable option if you don’t frequently crop your photos.
At software level there is the Photonic Engine, a powerful image processing technology. It runs in the background when you take a photo, optimising each pixel to improve detail and reduce noise. For night time and low-light photography, the Photonic Engine marks the 14 Pro as a significantly better camera, with the 13 Pro not quite matching it for image quality in these conditions.
The 14 Pro should also be your iPhone of choice if you like to film videos. Key to this is Action Mode, which stabilises shaky videos by replicating a camera gimble to smooth out the footage. This is a must-have for amateur and professional filmmakers, as it makes it much easier to create action-packed videos on-the-go, without the need for heavy industry equipment.
Which of these has the best battery?
Neither phone can be separated for battery life, so regardless of which device you choose, you’re getting the same excellent audio and video playback times.
The 14 Pro battery edges out the 13 Pro by an hour when watching videos, with up to 23 hours of usage to enjoy films and streams. However both have the battery power to support their superb display and processing performance.
Both phones boast great recharging speeds and capable of powering back up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W charger.
Which of these phones has 5G?
We’ve made it clear that when comparing the iPhone 13 Pro vs. the iPhone 14 Pro, each are truly superb smartphones sporting fast and smooth performance. These speeds are also possible when connecting to a mobile network, due to being 5G-ready.
With support for this lightning-fast network, the 13 Pro and 14 Pro can play online games and stream videos at stunning quality, with little worry for losing connection.
There’s no doubt that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro are very close as premium devices, with performance and display quality to back up this lofty tag. If you’re seeking an iPhone however that excels even more as an all-round media device, the iPhone 14 Pro should be at the top of your list.
If you’re planning to get either of these phones for your child, effective parental controls are vital when they’re streaming or gaming online. Our guide will show you how to set up these controls on an iPhone quickly and easily.
