Questions about broadband and switching

Why should I switch broadband with Mobiles.co.uk?

Here at Mobiles we offer free and impartial advice on choosing a new broadband package. We compare thousands of deals from the best service providers available, to help find the best deal for you, and ultimately save you money.

Will I save money by switching Broadband

Many broadband providers have impressive deals available for new customers. If you’ve been with the same provider for a while, chances are you’re on your supplier’s standard tariff and pricing. By switching things up you can enjoy a saving on your monthly services, and if you bundle up with other subscriptions such as phone and TV, this can work out even cheaper still.

What will happen to my old broadband service if I decide to switch?

When you find a new deal that you like the look of, your new supplier will take care of cancelling you old contract. You’ll receive confirmation from both your old and new providers, detailing the move as well as any cancellation charges if applicable.

How long will it take my new broadband supplier to set me up?

This can vary depending on circumstance, location, and the provider you choose, but most customers find themselves online within just three weeks. If you feel like your new service isn’t working out then don’t worry, you’ll have a 14 day cancellation period.

I’m in rented accommodation. Can I still get broadband?

Yes, you’ll just need permission from your landlord, or letting agent. Some services require installation work such as a satellite dish, so it’s always advisable to get in touch with the owner of your property before going ahead with any such work.

Are services subject to a credit check?

Yes, a credit check will be performed as part of the contact application.

Will I be charged line rental?

Most providers do charge line rental, as broadband is provided through a phone line installation. This line rental is likely to be included in the monthly cost, regardless of whether you decide to use the phone line provided. Some services such as Virgin Media can provide fibre optic broadband, which doesn’t incur a line rental, however this is location dependant.

What does ‘First-year cost’ refer to?

Some companies offer induction deals, in form of lower payments for the first year. ‘First year costs’ refers to the reduced payments for the initial 12 months, which is liable to change after this time.

What does ‘broadband speed’ mean?

Broadband speed refers to how fast you can download and upload stuff to the web. It’s measured in megabits per second (Mbps), and the national average is between 16-18Mbps. This is suitable for most households, although it can depend on how much of a heavy internet user your house may be. This speed is usually fine if your main online pastimes are Netflix and social media, but if you’re a web professional with massive files to send and receive, the fibre optic option may be more suitable.

Who provides the deals?

When comparing broadband deals, you’ll be offered a range of deals with some of the biggest service providers in the UK, such as Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. Our comparison service is powered by Carphone Warehouse, to ensure you can find the best deals in your local area, and secure the package that’s perfect for you.
