Increased 4G and 5G rollout

Increased 4G and 5G rollout

Three, iD Mobile’s network partner, is ending its 3G service in order to invest more into 4G and 5G. this means more customers across the UK will be able to enjoy the nation’s fastest 5G network, as awarded by Ookla1.

Whether you love streaming movies, playing online games, or simply browsing the web, you can expect lightning-fast speed and reliable connectivity. With Three investing a total of £2 billion, customers can expect better connectivity for the best mobile experience possible.

What does this mean for iD Mobile customers?

What does this mean for iD Mobile customers?

If you already use a phone with 4G/5G connectivity, you won’t need to do anything. If you’re using an older phone, which is only compatible with 3G, you won’t be able to make calls, send texts, or use data once 3G has been switched off.

It’s also worth noting that certain other nations will be switching off their 3G networks within the same timeframe, so you’ll also need a 4G compatible handset if travelling. If you need to update your handset, you can find our best iD Mobile deals on the latest handsets here.

FAQS

What should I do if my phone is 3G-only?

If your phone is only compatible with 3G, you unfortunately won’t be able to use iD Mobile network services once 3G is switched off. Browse our latest iD Mobile handsets, to update to a handset which supports 4G or higher, as well as 4G calling (VoLTE).

What is 4G calling (VoLTE)?

This is a free iD Mobile service, which ensures you can make calls in more places that ever. There’s no need to worry about indoor blackspots, as 4G calling (VoLTE) lets you make voice calls over the 4G network. All phones currently ranged are compatible.

What is the iD Mobile coverage in my area?

iD Mobile covers a whopping 99% of the UK population with its reliable 4G coverage, as well as super-fast 5G in selected areas. With more investment into 4G and 5G, this is only set to increase. If you’re unsure about your area, you can take a look at iD’s coverage tracker.

Why is Three switching off its 3G network?

The UK government recently announced that 2G and 3G is set to be phased out completely by 2033. Three has chosen to switch off its 3G network ahead of this, to focus funds and research into 4G and 5G tech for a better customer experience.

When will 3G be fully switched off?

Three has already begun a slow phasing-out of its 3G network. This will be ongoing, and is expected to be completely switched off by the end of 2024. As per the UK government’s announcement, all other 2G and 3G networks will be switched off by the end of 2033.

I use my handset for accessibility needs. Do I still need to update it?

We understand the importance of having a handset which meets your needs, however all 3G phones will be incompatible following the 3G switch off. If you’d like advice on choosing the right phone for you, please contact our sales team via the number at the top of this page, who will be happy to help.
